Ubisoft’s XDefiant is making huge changes

from Ubisoft XDefiant drastically changed its name. Ubisoft announced Tom Clancy’s XDefiant to a mixed reception in 2021, some felt it didn’t separate itself from other shooters on the market like Call of Duty and others thought the Tom Clancy brand was inappropriate for the game’s less serious tone. again, XDefiant appeared as a strange way to invoke his name. Clancy’s name has been used as a tag for tons of original Ubisoft games, unrelated to his novels, but it stands out more because of the whimsical tone and intense color scheme.

The reason the Tom Clancy name was attached is because the game features characters and settings from the various Tom Clancy brand titles from Ubisoft. Now Ubisoft is removing Tom Clancy’s name from the XDefiant the title after revealing the game will have characters outside of Clancy’s IP. Ubisoft has confirmed Stephen Totilo of Axios that Tom Clancy’s characters will always remain in the game. It’s unclear which characters will be included, but it seems likely that Ubisoft will pull franchises like Watch dogs. Ubisoft also announced new insider sessions for XDefiant which means players can sign up to test the game. At the moment testing is limited to PC, but Ubisoft is encouraging everyone to sign up as it will eventually expand to consoles. Players can register here if they want to get in on the action.

By removing the “Tom Clancy” from the name of their upcoming competitive shooter XDefiant, Ubisoft has also cleaned up the game’s website of just about everything gaming related.

Although Ubisoft has used the Tom Clancy brand on games like Rainbow Six Mining, a title that features aliens and other unrealistic concepts, XDefiant has a completely different tone. It will be interesting to see which characters make an appearance in XDefiant. Even though the upcoming tests are under NDA, it wouldn’t be surprising if some of these unannounced guest characters leaked. Rainbow Six Mining has had numerous leaks from its closed playtests, giving fans a very advanced look at the game.
