TOKYO OLYMPIC GAMES 2020 – Show Jumping Team Qualification
15-year-old Fredricson and All In have an incredible record. They were flawless on their way to individual silver at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games and once again on their way to individual silver here at Tokyo Wednesday night.
It will be a whole new competition when the action resumes in tomorrow’s team final where the top 10 teams from tonight’s qualifying meet again, all starting with a score of zero. But the Swedes look super confident ahead of this showdown in which they will be challenged by Belgium, Germany, Swiss, United States, France, Britain, Brazil and The Netherlands.
A number of countries have made spectacular releases, including Japan. Daisuke fukushima and Chanyon, who finished sixth in individual, had eight fouls when he was the first to represent the host country, but when Koki Saito and Chilensky were removed, which reduced their chances.
Then Irish scout Shane Sweetnam and Alejandro fell over the water trough at fence 10. They left the arena unscathed, but Sweetnam was devastated for his team and for the horse that is normally so reliable.
When the runners’ second rotation started that of Israel Vlock teddy bear fell to Liverpool’s previous oxer. Her 11-year-old mare had already refused at the second gate and had knocked down two gates along the way. Vlock was examined by medics after exiting the arena and was allowed to return to his hotel, but knowing that his country was now also out of the medal race.
On the other end of the spectrum, Swedes made it home with effortless ease. The Belgians and the Germans also seemed very comfortable.
Swiss finished with 10 on the board, the United States with 13, the reigning champions of France with 15, and Britain has accumulated 17. The last three teams to qualify were Brazil who accumulated 25 faults, The Netherlands who picked up 26 and Argentina who finished with 27 and squeezed Egypt among the top 10.
It won’t be long before the Tokyo The 2020 Olympic Team Show Jumping Champions are crowned.
