Gears of War Studio Goes “Next Generation Development”, But Don’t Expect Topical Games “For Some Time”
Don’t expect a Gears 6 announcement for “some time,” as the Coalition switches to a new engine.
Gears of War developer The Coalition has revealed that their future projects will be developed on Unreal Engine 5. This will likely result in a huge improvement in the visual quality of their games, and that says a lot considering how good Gears 5 is. . The wrong side? It also means that we won’t see any new Coalition projects for a while.
As the post on the Gears 5 website explains, “Switching to a new engine is a big undertaking, so we want to be clear that we won’t be announcing any new projects or titles for some time.”
It should be noted that the Coalition does not specify Gears of War projects here, which means we may well see the studio branching out into another IP. It would be interesting to see the team tackle an original project, but while there was also Xbox exclusive Star Wars game rumors in the works, the studio has since squashed those rumors.
The post also confirmed that the Coalition is moving to exclusively next-gen development, meaning its next games will only be released for the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S. Microsoft was committed to keeping its first cross-gen titles for the first two years after the Xbox Series X launch, but those games are probably still years before launch.
The Coalition isn’t just abandoning its Unreal Engine 4 games. You can still expect regular updates for Gears 5 with Ops 7 and 8 already in the works. Each operation will add new characters, maps and special events.
Find out what Xbox is up to in the meantime with these Xbox Series X games coming soon.
