Gearbox boss: Borderlands 3 PlayStation crossplay is ‘inevitable’

Borderlands 3 should get PlayStation crossplay very soon, Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford has said.
Crossplay might be the biggest new feature in modern gaming, especially for titles with live services and microtransactions. Borderlands 3, which sold 15 million copies, is one such game. Borderlands 3 did not launch with cross-play on the biggest gaming platform, the PlayStation 4. That should change soon.
At TwitterGearbox boss Randy Pitchford says Borderlands 3 crossplay on PS4/PS5 is inevitable:
“Borderlands 3 has supported cross-play for some time. The future addition of PlayStation to cross-play for BL3 is now what I would consider inevitable. More information to come as soon as we have it,” said Pitford.
So why was crossplay omitted? Speculation claims that it is because of Sony Crossplay Tax this required publishers to pay extra to activate the feature and to pay Sony a certain royalty if players purchased more items on other non-Sony platforms. For example, someone could play Borderlands 3 on PS4 and Xbox, and if they purchased more items on Xbox, it could incur a fee.
In May 2021, Pitchford confirmed that publisher 2K Games had forced Gearbox to pull crossplay. Details were slim, but everyone suspected it was due to the infamous cross-play fee.
“Good news or bad news first? Good news: An update for Borderlands 3 has been prepared for release, which includes full cross-play support on all platforms. Bad news: For certification, l “publisher has asked us to remove cross-play support for PlayStation consoles,” Pitchford said at the time.
Gearbox’s latest game, Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands, will come with full crossplay on PlayStation, Xbox, and PC, so it’s clear that 2K Games has some sort of deal with Sony on that.
