Asus ROG Strix Scar 15 (2021) Gaming Laptop Review
ROG Strix Scar 15 G533QS shows Asus is very serious about its line of AMD-powered gaming laptops. In the race to the top of the CPU fight, AMD has closed the gap with Intel, offering fierce competition in terms of price and performance.

The G533QS is the more expensive of the two Scar 15 configs, this one sporting an RTX 3080. Other than that, there isn’t much difference between this model and the G533QR, other than that the machine is powered by a RTX 3070. Each can be mounted. with an AMD Cezanne-H chip (Ryzen 7 5800H or Ryzen 9 5900HX). Between the memory and display options offered with the new Scar 15, you’re looking for a final price ranging from $ 2,000 to $ 2,700. Barely cheaper than its big brother the Scar 17, the Scar 15 manages to squeeze a lot of power into a smaller chassis.
One of the first things you will notice about this 15 inch laptop is the design. The Strix line of laptops are very much geared towards competitive gamers, so the look is skewed towards the flashy, designed to let everyone know that you are a gamer who plays games with very high frame rates. high.
The slash on the lid with the accompanying dot matrix pattern is stylish, although I think the huge ROG Eye logo is a bit too big; on the other hand, hey, it has rgb lighting. The RGB LEDs don’t stop there; The Scar’s most impressive design touch is the wraparound light bar that runs along the lower front of the laptop, controlled via ASUS Aura Sync, like the rest of RGB.
This Asus ROG Strix Scar 15 features a fast 1440p IPS panel with 165Hz refresh rate. There are also setups for a 1080p / 300Hz display or a slot in an RTX 3070 instead of the RTX 3080 if you’re looking to record a little scratch. The 1440p / 165Hz route will get the most out of the RTX 3080 crammed inside the Scar 15, provided you can afford the $ 2,700 price tag.
In action, the screen is a thing of beauty – whether gaming or watching media. I spent most of the last weekend watching hours of superheroes fight each other in Invincible, and the colors just right pop.
Ultra-thin bezels make gaming and watching movies more immersive, even if the trade-off is that you don’t have a webcam. Paying over $ 2000 for a laptop without a webcam (even crappy) stings a bit, but considering everything else the Scar 15 does it so well, I’ll allow it. So if you take a lot of video calls for work or to chat with your friends, grab one of the best webcams for gaming, and maybe a mic while you’re at it. The built-in noise canceling mic is usable but sounds a bit too small for any serious recording.
The typing experience on the Scar 15 can easily be overlooked when confronted with all the lights and colors of the system as a whole, but the optical-mechanical keyboard is fun to type. My words per minute hover around 75 on a good day, with 90% accuracy. I averaged 70-80% accuracy on the Strix keyboard, which isn’t bad.
Since this model has a 1440p display, I ran most of the benchmarks at its native resolution. Since its release, the Ryzen 9 5900HX has proven to be a powerful processor and has become a very desirable component of gaming laptops. It should be noted that the chip is a far cry from the desktop Ryzen 9 5900X, which has 12 cores. instead of the overclocked 8 cores of the 5900HX. In terms of performance, it hangs on the higher end of the CPU-hungry performance than other 15inches like the MSI GS66 Stealth, Gigabyte Aorus 15G, and Razer Blade 15.
It’s a powerful mobile chip that easily exceeds Intel’s offering. It’s no surprise that more and more laptop manufacturers are releasing AMD gaming laptops. Add to that 32GB of RAM and you have a decent little workstation.
We mentioned earlier that if you go for the RTX 3080 setup, going for a higher resolution seems like a no-brainer. The Scar 15 hit well over 70 fps on most of our gaming tests, with the notable exception of Metro Exodus reaching around 56 fps with all the bells and whistles triggered by our tests. Of course, if you’ve gone for 1080p gaming, you’ll hit some impressive numbers. I’m back to the current season of Apex Legends and easily averaged 160fps on Ultra at 1440p, which looks great on the move.
The touchpad is spacious and makes everyday use quite easy. If you’re going to be gaming, a wireless mouse or gamepad is still the best option for disturbing demons in Doom Eternal. The touchpad also has a toggle to change it to a numeric keypad, which isn’t new, but as someone who types in a spreadsheet every day, I’ll be taking a ten-key keyboard somewhere.
The Asus ROG Strix SCAR 15 G533QS, like its bigger (and more expensive) sibling Asus Scar 17, is one hell of a gaming laptop. Its power only matches its flashy RGB design without excuse. The powerful AMD processor, stunning display, and gaming performance make the Scar 15 one of the best 15-inch gaming laptops we’ve tested this year.
